Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina called for Sentsov’s release at the European Film Awards

Ukrainian director Oleg Sentsov illegally convicted in Russia has received support from the stage of European Film Academy in Poland. It was voiced by Maria Alyokhina, member of Pussy Riot

“Hi! My name is Masha. A small introduction. A few years ago, I did one small thing. (Puts on a balaclava) Well, it is pretty simple. I made like this, and for forty seconds, I screamed a song against Putin. The guy, who, I hope, we all don’t like. After that, I spent two years in prison.

Yes, the end of intoduction. Because it’s not about me. I’m here to speak about the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, who’s your colleague, who has not even done this (points to balaclava). Oleg Sentsov got a sentence of 20 years of prison. He is in Siberia, in Yakutsk, it is 10 000 kilometers from here. The weather for Yakutsk today is -46 ℃. So it’s really cold.

Oleg has two children. He’s forty years old. Twenty years in a Russian prison means actually death. I am going to read a small quote from a letter which he gave us a few months ago. He speaks about himself and about other political prisoners who are in Russian prisons:

“We’re not your weak point. If we are supposed to become nails in the coffin of tyrant, I would like to become one of those nails. Just know that this particular nail will not bend.”

What I’m going to say is very simple. I believe that community is stronger than any government, because community has no borders.

And I believe, I really believe that as a community we change different things. Finally, I would like to ask you to stand up for Oleg and his freedom. Now.
Thank you!”

In early December 2016, film director Alexander Sokurov has asked President Vladimir Putin to show mercy and release Sentsov. Putin also expressed confidence that the issue should be decided by the court.

On 25 August 2015, the North Caucasus District Military Court of Russia sentenced Oleg Sentsov, Ukrainian film director from Simferopol, to 20 years’ imprisonment in a penal colony on charges of involvement in terrorism. Russian investigators have called Crimean anarchist Alexander Kolchenko his crime associate. Kolchenko who was sentenced to 10 years in colony.
Kolchenko and Sentsov pleaded not guilty. Human rights organizations believe the

Activists in Kiyv held day of solidarity with the Crimean Four

Solidarity actions with the Crimean Four – Oleg Sentsov, Alexander Kolchenko, Gennadiy Afanasiev, and Alexey Chyrniy detained by the FSB in Simferopol two years ago – were held in several locations of Kyiv.

The “Crimean Hostages” are still imprisoned by the Russian authorities.

“The purpose of our action is to draw attention to the fate of the Crimean Four and to remind that they are still there,” said Maksym Butkevych, a member of the Solidarity Committee.

The solidarity events lasted throughout the day. They included a number of activities, for example, a exhibition of photo works by Gennadiy Afanasiev at the “Zhovten” cinema.

Friends and family members who gathered at the venue made speeches about the Crimean political prisoners.

Activists urged all the people concerned, both in Ukraine and abroad, to join the campaign. Berlin and New York confirmed their participation in the solidarity week.

Gennadiy Afanasiev signed the documents for extradition to Ukraine

Mother of political prisoner Olha Afanasieva reported that her son Gennadiy Afanasiev, who is serving a sentence in a Russian prison, signed documents required for his extradition to Ukraine

Gennadiy Afanasiev is a defendant in a criminal case against the Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov, convicted in Russia for 20 years in prison on charges of organizing a terrorist organization in Crimea.

The case against Afanasiev was considered by the court by conducting special proceedings, as he testified, and mentioned other defendants in the case. However, he retracted his confession during an interrogation conducted during the trial of Sentsov and the Crimean activist Alexander Kolchenko, stating that he was tortured during the questioning. He dropped his previous claims about the terrorist organization in Crimea and their participation in it, and denied the information on it. Afanasiev was sentenced in Russia to 7 years in a strict regime colony.

Kolchenko has been placed to a punishment cell

Mother of political prisoner Alexander Kolchenko notes that her son was placed to a punishment cell just after his arrival in the Kopeysk city colony, Chelyabinsk region.

“Sasha has been delivered to the place of imprisonment, which is situated in Kopeysk, Chelyabinsk region, and from the first day he was placed to a punishment cell,” said Larysa Kolchenko in her interview with Hromadske TV.

She stated that Alexander was confined to a punishment cell, because when entered the prison, he has saluted incorrectly. “On the first day he arrived there and had no time to do anything; he had just saluted in a wrong way,” Larysa Kolchenko noted.

As it came to light in early March, Alexander Kolchenko is to serve his sentence in Kopeysk penal colony №6, Chelyabinsk region. This colony has gained prominence after a large-scale prisoners’ riot, which took place in autumn 2012. Numerous human right defenders believe that the main problem of the colony is exorbitant exactions on the part of the administration, which are called “voluntary contributions”; in case of refusal from paying violence is used.

As was reported before, the film director Oleg Sentsov and anti-fascist Alexander Kolchenko were convicted by the North Caucasus Military District Court on 20 and 10 years in prison. They were charged with planning the bombing of the Lenin Monument in Simferopol, as well as setting fire to the offices of the public organization Russian Community of Crimea and to an office of the United Russia party in Simferopol. The human rights organization Memorial has declared Sentsov and Kolchenko political prisoners.

UPD: On 11 March, journalist Anton Naumlyuk reported that 15 days of Kolchenko’s punishment cell detention had already expired.
